Here is a simple and yummy chicken curry from my grandma’s recipe diary. It is very easy to make and requires very less ingredients. It tastes best when cooked in a claypot or manchatti which add the extra flavors that males it a special dish. Enjoy!!!
Chicken, preferably boned 1 kg, cut to medium size pieces
Red onion ½ cup, thinly sliced
Green chilly 2 nos, julienned
Potato 1 big, cubed
Ginger – Garlic 1 TBSP each, chopped
Curry leaves a fistful
Red chilly powder 1 TBSP
Coriander powder 2 TBSP
Garam masala 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Coconut oil 1 TBSP
Salt as needed
Preparation
Heat oil in a preferably in a clay pot (Manchatti) or a deep bottomed pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add the sliced onions, green chilly, potato, ginger, garlic and curry leaves one by one sautéing each for 1 minute respectively. Now sauté the whole mixture until the onions turn golden brown in color. Next add the cut and cleaned chicken along with salt. Mix this well with the onion mixture and add water to the level of the chicken. Cook this until chicken pieces are tender. Now add the red chilly powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Mix the masalas well and cook this for another 15-20 minutes at medium flame until the curry is thickened. Switch off flame and keep covered until ready to serve. This is one yummy chicken curry and is best with rice, appam, idiyappam or even rotis.
Cheers!!!

looks very yumm!
ReplyDeleteWonderful recipe. I just made it and it came out great.I had to reduce the red-chilli powder or it would have been too hot for me. Next time, I'll brown the onions first and then start adding the other ingredients - I felt some were burning before the onions browned. How do you avoid that?
ReplyDeleteHi Cedric..Glad to know you liked the curry. Actually if you think that some ingredients were burning, before adding onions, please keep the flame to low and continue cooking. I never had that problem, also in a claypot the heat is pretty much maintained once it comes to a temperature. If you used a non stick pan, keep it at low medium heat throughout the cooking process, that should avoid the burning..Hope this helps..
