Green onion/Spring onion/scallions thoran (Serves 4)

Green onion Thoran

Thoran is an integral part of  South Indian cuisine. Here we are introducing a new variant made with green onions/scallions and it came out pretty tasty. The recipe was given by Vinitha (Suji’s SIL) who first introduced this dish to us. Thanks a bunch chechi for the recipe. It tastes quite similar to beans thoran and is a welcome change  from the usual  thorans we are so used to…So here you go…

Green onions/Spring onion 4 bundle, finely chopped
Red chilly powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
Grated coconut ¼ cup
Cumin seeds ¼ tsp
Mustard seeds ½ tsp
Salt as needed
Oil ½ tsp

P1100593

Preparation

Heat oil in a pan at medium heat and splutter mustard seeds. Follow up with finely chopped green onions/spring onions. Mix well and cook covered for 3 minutes. Open lid and add red chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt. Mix all these well and cook covered for a few minutes. After a while, open the lid and allow all the liquid to evaporate. Grind together cumin seeds and coconut. Once the green onions are cooked and attained a dry consistency, add the coconut mixture and combine well. Adjust salt and take off from the stove. Serve with rice..

  5. Scallions are something which always end up in the garbage bag..atleast some of them. This is such a nice way to use them up. I somehow never thought they will hold up by themselves, but looks like they do. Thanks for the idea!
